Oliva Espin, PhD is an internationally and nationally known multicultural and feminist scholar. She is Professor Emerita in the Department of Women’s Studies at San Diego State University and the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University. Her lecture will focus on the psychological impact of migration with a focus on the lives of immigrant women and those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Dr. Espin will analyze the impact of the intersections of gender, race, ethnicity, class and sexual orientation on the experience of migration. We will discover the voices and life experiences of immigrants/refugees from varied cultural backgrounds to understand the diversity and the commonality of the social/political histories that have produced those voices and/or silenced them. An additional focus will be on how narratives and life stories influence the formation of identity, and on the cultural conditions that may constrain or facilitate the development of such narratives.
