Guy Guber
CSPP San Francisco Graduate
PsyD Clinical Psychology

Please share your fondest memories from your time as a CSPP student:
Feeling like a 12 year-old in a candy store upon starting the program; the humanity and support demonstrated by faculty and staff during an extended period of personal difficulties; the joy/relief/astonishment/satisfaction of being congratulated as "Dr.” by my committee-members upon successfully defending my dissertation; the similar & even more intense emotions that I experienced upon attending & participating in graduation ceremonies.

What is unique about the CSPP education?
CSPP’s exclusive focus on the preparation of psychologists, and emphasis on clinical preparation, as well as the provision of a strong foundation are certainly assets that I value.  Additionally, as an alum with a disability, the school’s ongoing commitment to facilitating accessibility has been of primary importance to me, and constitutes an enormous strength of the program.

Are there any faculty members who were vital in your development as a mental health professional?
With very few exceptions, I found the faculty deeply committed to my professional development.

What are your current clinical interests?
Working with adults, elders, and people with disabilities in longer-term, individual psychotherapy.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Despite having "fussed” as much (maybe more) then many about the various rigors/hoops of this rather remarkable adventure, I am acutely and deeply aware of what a privilege the adventure has been, and I am deeply grateful for having had the opportunity and support/encouragement to have undertaken it.

Please share your fondest memories from your time as a CSPP student:
I was a student at CSPP from 2000 til 2004. They were very full and hectic years, and I learned and grew tremendiously. I loved the diversity of the student body, and I thought everyone contributed to each other's learning experience. My practicum at the mobile crisis team in Berkeley Mental Health was really great. I also learned a lot during my placement in the Family Violence Institute at the Psychological Services Center, especially from working with young gang members.

What is unique about the CSPP education?
The multicultural focus at CSPP is quite unique, and both faculty and other students contributed to this learning experience. The variety of clinical trainings that are available through the practicum programs is also a great strenght of the CSPP education.

Are there any faculty members who were vital in your development as a mental health professional?
Dr. Diane Zelman and Dr. Fred Heide, who were my dissertation chairs were very important to me, Dr. Valata Jenkins-Monroe, who inspired me greatly in my clinical career, Dr. Christopher Tori, Dr. Suzanne Pallak and Dr. Molly Stullman, who inspired my work with offenders of violence. Working with David Wee and Linda Ross at the mobile crisis team was also a great learning experience.

What are your current clinical interests?
Treating violence, especially working with teenagers and adults in gangs and/or involved in organized crime, as well as working with trauma survivors.

What are your current research interests?
At the moment I am working on a psychotherapy model for teenagers and young adults in gangs.
Other reserach interests are therapy techniques based on nature medicine and energy medicine, and how these can be applied as an addition to psychotherapy.

Have you received any special awards/grants, or served on any professional boards?
Member of the research board of the woman-child division at Oslo University Hospital, recipient of the King Olav V Fund Scholarship, listed in Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in Science.
