The Dr. Richard Kopp Scholarship Fund was created in recognition of Dr. Kopp's commitment and contribution to the profession of psychology and to the students of the California School of Professional Psychology for nearly 40 years. This scholarship fund provides opportunities for current and future CSPP students at our Los Angeles campus.
Richard R. Kopp, Ph.D., ABPP is remembered for not only his expertise, but also the joy he brought into the classroom, often bringing a guitar to class and singing.
Dr. Kopp was a lifelong contributor to the profession of psychology. Beginning with his doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1973 and continuing through his professional roles in 2012, Dr. Kopp brought wisdom, warmth, humor, and encouragement to all of his endeavors.
At the California School of Professional Psychology, now a graduate school within Alliant International University, Dr. Kopp attained the prestigious titles of Distinguished Professor and later Professor Emeritus for the quality of his teaching, scholarship, and service since 1973. Along the way he also taught nationally and internationally, with honors including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the North American Society of Adlerian Psychology, the Los Angeles County Psychological Association’s Award for Distinguished Service to the Profession of Psychology, and invitations to deliver keynote and commencement addresses for numerous professional meetings and graduation ceremonies. He was well known and highly regarded for his ability to explain complex material in an understandable manner, both in his talks and in his writings.
Dr. Kopp’s contributions to scholarship included service as a consulting editor for such journals as Psychotherapy: Theory, Research, and Practice and The Journal of Individual Psychology. He also authored numerous professional articles and book chapters. His scholarly and clinical book Metaphor Therapy, published in 1995, made a lasting contribution to the profession of psychology through the step-by-step process it provided for exploring and transforming client-generated metaphors.
In addition, Dr. Kopp made significant contributions to the profession through his extensive work in such areas as parent coaching, conflict resolution, and client resistance. A practicing clinician as well as a revered teacher and productive scholar, Dr. Kopp earned specialty board certification in clinical psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology in 2003. He also inspired colleagues across the globe through his open discussions about how he dealt with his own medical conditions throughout his career.
Dr. Kopp passed away peacefully on July 23, 2012. He was a delightful human being who will be dearly missed, as well as a loving husband, father and grandfather, and a fine musician and songwriter.
