Library developments

Posted By Scott Zimmer, Wednesday, February 04, 2009
We have a few library developments to share:

1.) Alliant Mexico City's library is coming along nicely.  Furniture, books and computers are in place, and candidates for the position of librarian are being reviewed.  We hope to have a person in place very soon, as we are anxious to provide access to the collection of Dr. Ruth Troeller, which she has graciously donated.

2.) Behind the scenes, we are planning to implement an Electronic Resources Management (ERM) component of our library catalog.  This should help us to keep track of the many databases and online journals we provide access to, and should ultimately make the online research process more seamless.

3.) Working closely with IT, we are also looking into the possibility of providing research assistance through instant messaging. Many other libraries are already doing this, and we think it would be a great service for students, faculty and staff.  Be sure to check http://library.alliant.edu regularly for updates.

Inaugural Post

Posted By Scott Zimmer, Thursday, January 15, 2009
Time to get those first-post jitters out of the way!

My name is Scott Zimmer, and I joined Alliant a few months ago as University Librarian.  That means I am director of the Walter Library at the San Diego campus, and I also supervise the directors of Alliant's other library locations.

I'd like this blog to be a forum to discuss current and new directions for the library, as well as a place to announce new programs and services.  I welcome your comments!  Feel free to post them here or to send them to me directly.  In the same vein, you can always email [email protected] when you need help or have a concern.  Those messages go straight to me, but with an address that is much easier to remember.

That should do for now.
